We had driven along this promontory out of San Diego more to get a glimpse across to Mexico but found ourselves in the midst of this military cemetery. It turns out some people visit this place as a kind of ‘thing to do’ but it’s not our thing. Most people also feel a huge sense of pride at the sacrifice these soldiers made. I was just shocked and disgusted at the scale of wasted lives set out in regimented lines all around me. It’s not that I feel these individual soldiers did wrong and don’t deserve proper recognition. It is more what the governments do wrong to waste such young lives. If there are gods I’m really not sure they would approve
